Franklin was born in Boston in 1706. He was the fifteenth of seventeen children. His father was a candle maker and soap boiler. Franklin's formal education ended at age ten, but he continued to read and learn throughout his life.

At age 12, Franklin was apprenticed to his brother James, a printer. He learned the printing trade and also began to write and publish his own essays. In 1723, Franklin left Boston and moved to Philadelphia. He worked as a printer and publisher for several years before starting his own printing business in 1728.

Franklin's printing business was successful, and he soon became one of the most prominent printers in the colonies. He published a variety of materials, including books, newspapers, and almanacs. Franklin's almanacs were especially popular, and they helped to make him a household name.

In addition to his printing business, Franklin was also active in public life. He served in the Pennsylvania Assembly and the Continental Congress. He also helped to found the University of Pennsylvania and the American Philosophical Society.

Franklin was a strong advocate for American independence. He played a key role in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence and the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Revolutionary War.

After the war, Franklin served as the first Postmaster General of the United States. He also served as the American ambassador to France.

Franklin died in Philadelphia in 1790. He is buried in Christ Church Burial Ground.
