Formation and Deployment

The 24th, 25th, and 26th Service Battalions were formed in August 1914, while the 27th Service Battalion was formed in September 1914. These battalions were initially assigned to the 7th and 8th Northumberland Fusilier Brigades of the 3rd Northumbrian Division. In October 1914, the 7th and 8th Northumberland Fusilier Brigades were redesignated as the 149th and 150th Brigades, respectively, and they were assigned to the 50th (Northumbrian) Division.

The 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th Service Battalions arrived in France in December 1915 and were deployed to the Western Front. They participated in the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and the Battle of Arras in 1917. In 1918, the 24th and 25th Service Battalions were transferred to Palestine, where they fought in the Battle of Megiddo. The 26th and 27th Service Battalions were transferred to Mesopotamia, where they fought in the Battle of Khan Baghdadi.

Combat Experiences

The 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th Service Battalions experienced heavy fighting throughout World War I. They fought in some of the most intense battles of the war, including the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Gallipoli. These battalions suffered heavy losses, but they also fought with great distinction, earning several battle honors.

The 24th Service Battalion was awarded the Victoria Cross for its actions at the Battle of the Somme. The 25th Service Battalion was awarded the Military Cross for its actions at the Battle of Gallipoli. The 26th Service Battalion was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for its actions at the Battle of Khan Baghdadi. The 27th Service Battalion was awarded the Territorial Decoration for its services.

Disbandment

The 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th Service Battalions were disbanded in 1919 after the end of World War I. The men who served in these battalions returned to their civilian lives, but they never forgot their experiences in the war. They formed a strong bond of comradeship, and they continued to meet regularly after the war to remember their fallen comrades and celebrate their shared experiences.

Legacy

The 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th Service Battalions of the Northumberland Fusiliers left a lasting legacy. They fought with great distinction in World War I, and they helped to secure victory for the Allies.
