The LBM method is based on the premise that individuals with autism have a unique way of understanding and processing information. By utilizing a systematic and visual approach, LBM helps students to bridge the gap between their internal world and the external environment, empowering them to communicate their thoughts and emotions.

The Lions Bears Math Approach

LBM consists of three main components:

  • Lions: Represent the letters of the alphabet. Each letter is assigned a specific color, shape, and sound. This visual and tactile approach helps students to associate letters with their corresponding sounds and meanings.
  • Bears: Represent words. Each word is made up of a series of lions that are connected together. By combining lions in different ways, students can create an infinite number of words, unlocking their potential for communication and expression.
  • Math: Provides a structured framework for learning and organization. Math principles are used to teach students about sequencing, patterns, and problem-solving, which are essential skills for everyday life.

Benefits of Lions Bears Math

LBM has been shown to have numerous benefits for individuals with autism, including:

  • Improved communication: LBM provides students with a tangible and meaningful way to express themselves. By using lions and bears to represent letters and words, students can overcome the challenges of verbal communication and participate more fully in social interactions.
  • Enhanced literacy: LBM teaches students the fundamentals of reading and writing in a way that is both engaging and accessible. Through hands-on activities and repetitive practice, students develop a strong foundation in phonics, vocabulary, and grammar.
  • Increased social skills: LBM promotes social interaction and collaboration by providing students with a shared language and common learning experiences. Through group activities and peer support, students learn valuable social skills such as turn-taking, problem-solving, and empathy.
  • Reduced frustration and anxiety: LBM provides a predictable and structured learning environment that can help to reduce frustration and anxiety for individuals with autism. By breaking down complex concepts into smaller, more manageable steps, LBM empowers students and fosters a sense of accomplishment.

Lions Bears Math in the Classroom

LBM is a versatile approach that can be implemented in a variety of educational settings, including special education classrooms, regular education classrooms, and home-based learning environments. Teachers and parents can use LBM to:

  • Teach basic literacy skills, such as letter recognition, phonics, and vocabulary
  • Support students with communication difficulties, such as those with autism, apraxia, or selective mutism
  • Provide a structured and predictable learning environment that reduces anxiety and promotes success
  • Foster social interaction and collaboration among students with diverse learning needs

Lions, Bears, and the Future of Autism Education

The Lions Bears Math approach has the potential to revolutionize the way we teach and support individuals with autism.
